    • Art Matting and Mounting Workshop 5/3
      • Ages 16-Adult

        Learn to properly affix and display your photographs, drawings, prints, and paintings using a mat cutter and various archival mounting methods. This demonstration based workshop covers proper measurement and cutting of mat board, hinge mounting, elevation mounting, and a discussion on exhibition preparation. Bring 1 piece of artwork up to 11”x14” to mount and mat during the class.

        Fine art photographer David Ashman currently resides in Annapolis, MD. He captures images of abstraction, life, uninhabited landscapes & unique portraits exclusively on black and white film using a vintage medium format camera. David has studied with master photographers John Sexton, Chip Forelli, Tom Wolff, and John Goodman. His hand crafted black and white prints are part of numerous private and public collections including the DC Art Bank. He has exhibited at various solo & juried exhibitions, and has received numerous awards.

Nannette will guide you through assembling an interest-catching portfolio to help you promote yourself and your artwork. Participants can bring a binder with front and back cover pockets to work on their portfolio or wait to see what can be produced. Some items will be available at the workshop for an additional cost.

    • Resident Artist and Organization Classes
      • Diana Marta holds painting and drawing classes for adults in HCCA studio 3. Students from beginning to experienced are welcome. Instruction includes methods and approaches for technical and expressive use of drawing, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and collage. Lessons are based on formal design, observation, theme and invention.         David Zuccarini, nationally recognized artist, gives private instruction in traditional drawing and painting styles in Studio 10. Ongoing instruction provided for all levels of adult students including individualized instruction in charcoal, pastel and oil.     • Sumi Painting
      • Ages 13-Adult

        Learn the traditions and techniques of Sumi ink brush painting through various demonstrations and practice. You will explore East Asian concepts of line, brush stroke and composition with a focus on the plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo. Learn to express yourself through this unique cultural style.

        Myung Sook Kim is a Maryland artist who received her MA in studio art from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio. She recently had a solo exhibit of her paintings at the Columbia Art Center in Columbia, MD, and has exhibited internationally at LaMer Gallery in Seoul, Korea; Degar Gallery in Virginia; Muse Gallery in Philadelphia; the Towson Commons Gallery in Baltimore and Maryland Hall in Annapolis.

Sessions purchased in advance are only good for one year from time of purchase. Pre-registration is not required.

    • Loosen Up!
      • Ages: 17-Adult

        Inspired by artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Marsden Hartley and Helen Frankenthaler (to name a few), in this course students will learn to take their artistic skills to a whole new level, while exploring a wide range of possibilities within the realm of drawing and painting. Loosening the stroke of the pencil, pen and brush, experimentation is the key to this class, as students are exposed to fresh and lively approaches to subject matter including still-life in the studio and on location (outside). Students will have an opportunity to utilize artistic media in non-traditional ways. This is an excellent art course for anyone who loves to paint, but feels the need to loosen-up or expand their repertoire or for a student preparing a college or A.P. portfolio.

        Karen Graff is a fine artist with experience in traditional plein aire painting and mixed media, as well as fashion design. She has taught both middle school and high school art, including Advanced Placement Studio Art and Art History. She currently teaches high school art at the Key School in Annapolis, where she teaches studio courses and oversees yearbook. She received her Bachelor's in Art Education from Millersville University, and completed graduate work there and at Towson University.

    • Basic Black & White Film Photography - Adult
      • Take a step back and learn the hands-on basics of black and white photography: how a camera works, proper exposure, composing and shooting a photograph, and developing your film. Utilize your techniques learned in class in weekly assignments. Developing chemistry and 3 rolls of 35 mm film are included in fee. Bring your own 35mm camera.

    • No Boundries Musical Theatre Program (ages 17 and up)
      • No Boundaries is a musical theater program for young adults and adults (ages 17 and up) with mild to moderate disabilities. Participants sing, dance and act segments from one of Broadway’s famous musicals. The class will end with a public performance. Offered in partnership with the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks Office of Therapeutic Services.
